How we know

One source: Environment and Climate Change Canada. Not yet confirmed by a second, independent source.

Our own score for this event is 37 out of 100.

This is our versioned heuristic index, not source severity or a calibrated probability. Urban PEI does not count unique people.

Computed under scoring rules v5. Rows carrying other versions were judged by different rules and are not directly comparable.

Series begins 8 March 2026. Comparisons refer to that period only. Collection gap: 14-26 August 2026.

This data is aggregated algorithmically from scientific sources. Not a replacement for official emergency warnings.

Safety information

What to do in a winter storm or extreme cold

Three things first, then what to do before, during and after. From FEMA’s Ready.gov and the US National Weather Service.

For this reportSevere Weather · Sainte-Catherine

  1. Stay off the roads

Travel only if you must. If you are stuck in a car, stay in it, run the engine a few minutes an hour with the exhaust clear of snow.

    Ready.gov
  2. Heat safely

Never heat the house with an oven, a barbecue or a generator indoors: carbon monoxide kills without warning.

    Ready.gov
  3. Watch for frostbite and hypothermia

Numb, white or greyish skin; shivering, confusion, slurred speech. Get warm and get help.

    Ready.gov

Before, during, after. Here it is still “during”.

Before · When a storm or a cold wave is forecast

  • Supplies for several days

    Water, food, medicines, torches, batteries.

  • A kit in the car

Blankets, water, snacks, jump leads; keep the tank full.

  • Carbon monoxide alarm

Install and test one, with the smoke alarms.

Ready.gov (FEMA)

During · In the storm or the cold

  • Layers

Several warm layers, hat and gloves; limit time outside.

  • Shovel slowly

Hard effort in the cold strains the heart.

  • Generators outdoors

At least six metres from windows and doors.

Ready.gov (FEMA)

After · When it passes

  • Warm frostbite gently

With body heat or warm (not hot) water; do not rub.

  • Warm hypothermia from the core

Chest, neck, head and groin first, in dry blankets.

  • Check on others

    Older people, children and pets.

Questions people ask

How do I recognise hypothermia?

Shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, drowsiness. Get the person warm and call for help. Source: Ready.gov (FEMA).

Can I use a gas oven to heat the house?

No. Ovens, barbecues and generators indoors produce carbon monoxide, which kills without warning. Source: Ready.gov (FEMA).

Should I stay in a car stuck in snow?

Yes: it is shelter, and people are found more easily with their car. Keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow. Source: Ready.gov (FEMA).
