Safety information

What to do in dense fog

First three things, then what to do before, during and after. From the US National Weather Service’s fog safety pages.

For this reportSevere Weather · Willoughby

  1. Slow down, low beams on

Slow down and leave plenty of room to the vehicle ahead. Use low-beam headlights, and fog lights if you have them, so your tail lights are on too. Never high beams: their glare makes it harder to see.

    NWS
  2. If you cannot see, get off the road

Turn on your hazard lights and pull into a safe place, such as a car park. If there is none, pull as far off the road as you can, keep only the hazard lights on and take your foot off the brake, so no one follows your lights into you.

    NWS
  3. On the water, slow down and listen

Turn on all your running lights, listen for other boats and for fog horns, and keep out of shipping lanes: large ships cannot see you.

    NWS

Before, during, after. Here it is still “during”.

Before · When fog is forecast

  • Allow extra time

You will need to drive more slowly than usual.

  • On a boat, know where you are

A compass, GPS or a chart, and radar if you have it.

US National Weather Service

During · In the fog

  • Follow the lines

Keep your eyes on the road markings to stay in your lane.

  • Keep your distance

Leave room for sudden stops and changes in the traffic.

  • Lost on the water

If you cannot get your bearings, stay put in a safe place until the fog lifts.

US National Weather Service

After · When it lifts

  • Below freezing, watch for ice

Freezing fog leaves a thin, almost invisible layer of ice on roads, steps and pavements. Drive more slowly where it may be icy.

Questions people ask

Why not use high beams in fog?

Their light bounces back off the fog and dazzles you: you see less, not more. Use low beams, and fog lights if you have them. Source: US National Weather Service (NWS).

What should I do if I can see almost nothing?

Turn on your hazard lights and pull into a safe place, such as a car park. If you have to stop at the roadside, pull as far off as you can, keep only the hazard lights on and take your foot off the brake. Source: US National Weather Service (NWS).
