About Calamity.live, Boilerplate

Calamity.live is a real-time global disaster monitoring platform that aggregates, normalizes, and scores natural disaster events from scientific data sources. Covering 16 disaster types, from earthquakes and wildfires to volcanic eruptions and disease outbreaks, the platform detects cascade interactions between hazards using 20 heuristic interaction rules informed by hazard literature; the weights are not calibrated probabilities. Key capabilities include: a proprietary CalamityScore (0-100) for heuristic event priority, urban proximity indices and separately identified gridded population estimates, and cascade modeling that identifies secondary hazard chains (e.g., earthquake → landslide → flooding). The platform serves readers who want to know what is happening near them, researchers (bulk dataset exports), civil protection and disaster risk reduction agencies (CAP-compliant early warning feeds), and media (embeddable widgets). Daily Risk Headlines

The Calamity Forecast Index (CFI) generates heuristic activity assessments for covered country and hazard pairs. Citations need the calculation date, validity, model version and coverage. Values do not establish occurrence probability or predictive accuracy, and require editorial interpretation.

How often is data updated?

Data is polled in 4 tiers: critical hazards (earthquakes, tsunami) every 45 seconds, near-real-time sources every 5 minutes, monitoring sources every 30 minutes, and slow-moving hazards every 6-24 hours.

What are the data sources?

We aggregate from USGS, EMSC, GDACS, NASA FIRMS, NOAA, national geological surveys, weather services and other public agencies. Every source and its current state is listed on /coverage.

Is the data reliable for editorial use?

Calamity aggregates and scores data from established scientific monitoring organizations. It is not a replacement for official emergency alerts. All events include source attribution for verification.

Can I embed the map in my article?

Is the CalamityScore proprietary?
