About Near-Earth Object Monitoring
Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) are asteroids and comets whose orbits bring them close to Earth. While catastrophic impacts are extremely rare, continuous monitoring is essential for planetary defense. Calamity tracks NEO close approaches and impact risk assessments in real-time.
Our asteroid monitoring integrates data from NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), the JPL Sentry impact monitoring system, the JPL Close Approach Data service, and the European Space Agency's NEO Coordination Centre (NEOCC). Impact risk is measured using both the Torino Scale (0-10, public communication) and the Palermo Scale (logarithmic, technical assessment).
Most tracked objects have Torino Scale 0 (no hazard) or 1 (routine discovery warranting monitoring). Objects reaching Torino 2+ trigger heightened observation campaigns. The CalamityScore for asteroids incorporates both scales along with close approach distance and estimated diameter.
